Why Start with Housing?

  • between 11 and 37 percent of young adults who age out of foster care experience homelessness

  • between 25 and 50 percent of young adults who have exited care experience ‘precarious housing’: couch surfing, doubling up, moving frequently, difficulty paying rent, eviction

  • due to demand exceeding funding, housing assistance through the Lebanon County Housing Authority is wait-listed, ranging from a few months to many years

  • lack of stable and suitable housing leads to negative outcomes across a range of domains from education and employment to physical and mental health

  • young adults who have spent time in foster care are more likely to become unemployed, drug dependent, homeless, or victims of sex trafficking than same-age peers
